GENERAL INFORMATION ON MY FISHING WATERS. see Bait Cast or Fly Fishing pages for specifics Mark Twain Lake 18,000 acres at normal pool 606 msl 10 miles from my home base. Beautiful highland type reservoir with no development. Numerous 1st class 4 lane boat ramps and large parking lots. There are only two marinas and they are tucked away in coves. Blackjack Marina , near the dam and Indian Creek Marina, mid-lake. The bass are heavily pressured due to tournament fishing. Weekdays are best. The lake is heavily fished for crappie. I will be fly fishing for both crappie, and largemouth bass on the lake. I prefer NOT to fish it on weekends due to the tournament traffic.
There are restrooms at the marinas and at all of the primary boat ramps scattered around the lake. Clarence Cannon Dam & Mark Twain Lake Lake
Salt River Re-regulation Pool 9.5 miles long- From Clarence Cannon Dam to Re-regulation Dam. Eagles have been feeding here as of this writing 1-20-2010. Reported counts of about 50. Power Generation is very sporadic and pool levels can rise about 1.5 ft hr with fast currents. Slightly winding with a nice variety of structure and cover to fish. I have only targeted largemouth bass on this pool. There are two ramps on this pool. One near the dam which has restrooms. A second ramp is located 7 miles downstream on the north side of the pool.
Salt River 53 miles long -From Rereg Dam to the Mississippi River. Meandering, with with oxbows, islands, and has several small feeder creeks. Very limited access. There is a public ramp near the dam and another one about 18 miles downstream. 50cfs min to 6,000 cfs flow. april-nov. 12,000 cfs possible dec-march Fluctuating levels depending on power generation and rainfall. Flat bottom jon boats are the boats of choice here for at least 40 miles at normal pools, due to the number of shallow rocks and bars. Largemouth and Smallmouth. Good population of 1-4 lb smallmouth with 6 lb possible. White bass, sunfish, Rock Bass (goggle eye) Clarity and action is variable due to random Power Generation. Mostly clean bottom with sand and gravel bars and riffles as well as rocky areas. The river is kept flushed by the dam discharge. Virtually all shoreline is privately owned so fishing must be done from the boat, or waded when the shallows are reached. Additional private access points are currently being explored.
Mississippi River 83 mile stretch
This stretch is almost devoid of aquatic vegetation. Pool L&D 22 mm301 and 23 miles above Hannibal, MO dockage. Tourist town with activities to keep your family busy. Wing dams provide a mixed bag. Feeder creeks, rivers, and side channels.
Main river, largemouth, smallmouth, white bass, drum. Wing dams-Mixed bag. Largemouth, smallmouth, walleye, drum, catfish Backwater sloughs and side channels-Largemouth, Bowfin, Catfish, Silver Carp, Big Eye Carp, Gar. Feeder Creeks, largemouth, smallmouth, occasional drum and white bass. Some of these areas can be a bit hazardous due to Flying Fish. (Asian Silver Carp) I was getting hit by them quite a bit until I figured out the triggering motor speed that excites them. I could fill up the boat with them at a speed just above idle. These are supposedly good eating fish, similar to cod. The prehistoric bowfin (aka dogfish) is an exciting secondary fish to catch while bass fishing. It's a toothy fighter responsible for occasional bite-offs. It's considered a sport fish to a growing group of anglers. When working the shallower areas I catch catfish occasionally on spinner baits or jigs.
Pool L&D 24 mm273 and 28 miles above Dam is at Clarksville, MO. Louisiana, MO dockage. There are several feeder creeks and the Salt River feeding this pool. There are side channels and some backwater type areas. Wing dams abound and produce a mixed bag. Species mix same as above. Pool L&D 25 mm 241 and 32 miles above Elsberry, MO dockage This is 70 miles from my home base. This can be fished from the Louisiana dockage but involves locking through and much higher fuel costs. Bright, mid-day prospecting on this pool has shown several highly probable areas. Some are proven for largemouth, smallmouth, and bowfin. Due to the distances and expense involved, most of these areas haven't been fished during prime times, though I have caught scattered largemouth and young smallmouth during what are usually poor fishing hours, mid-day afternoons. A few very well-proven areas are subject to a combination of variable factors, which I monitor. Short notice call list is advised. Call for more info.
